Student Experiences

DHBW Loerrach welcomes students each semester from all over the world! We are always looking for new students to study abroad with us and are constantly aiming to provide an unforgettable experience here in Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany. Below, you can read about some of our student's experiences including their time within the University as well as their personal experiences in Loerrach and travelling Europe!

Gudjon Reynisson

Nationality: Icelandic

Program: Exchange

Course: International Business - taught in English

When I arrived in Lörrach I didn't really know what to expect. I had never heard of this town or ever been to this area in Germany. Back home in Iceland I study Fisheries Science and one can imagine that southern Germany is usually not the place that comes to people's minds when they hear about fisheries. This school is extremely diverse however it wasn't difficult for me to find classes that matched my classes back home in the International Business department. The teachers that taught me were all excellent teachers that clearly wanted to bring out the best in all of us and for us to understand the subject. I especially liked how they tried to tie everything that we learned to reality and make the material relevant to what we were going to do in the future. What I treasure most about my time here though is the people I met and the friends I made. Everyone greeted me with open arms and I'm positive that I made a few friends for life here.

"I had the luxury of spending time with student from DHBW in a professional environment. My exchange buddies are Klara and Marian. I had great help from them getting to know the culture during leisure time. Especially with food. I am a huge food oriented person. Coming to Germany, I know I will have great fun with sausages, chocolates, and beer. But I didn't know there was more! Despite of all the fun I had with the kinds of wursts I could find on the market, I can not believe the various kinds of cheese here. I am a great cook and baker; the bread here is inspiring! I lived in the south part of the famous Black Forrest. I ran all over the places and went on hikes for exercises. My 4 months of work here are not done yet, but from my tone I think you can tell how much I am still excited about this opportunity.  I have travelled to a lot of countries during my stay here. I have been to the heart of France, 2 major cities in Switzerland that you could find from elementary text books, the country of music and home of Sisi, and 3 distinguish cities that outline the world's fashion, religion, and history in Italy. I visited major cities in Germany that shaped world's highest achievement in car industries, cities that are known for the home of world class musician, and a city that has the world knows its name for the beer festival and its incredible people. My trip is not ended and when I get a chance to revisit, I will. Thank you DHBW for hosting such opportunity. My friendship with the friends i made before and after i came here lives as my love for the country. Best regards!

Here is a random out of context but most used word in a conversation "genau"!

I didn't come alone, my family visited me during New Year. This is me and my family at Munich, notice the matching jack from me and my dad!"

"I always wanted to study and work overseas, so I went on study abroad to test my skills. The experience gained in the DHBW University was beneficial as I had the opportunity to experience a different lifestyle living overseas as a student. The professors here really focus on teamwork and real-life experiences. We do search for solutions, but we also discover why things happen. Studying here is not only gives me a great opportunity to travel across the Europe, but also I have been able to learn the others culture and language especially German language which is the most unique and difficult to learnt.

I have only one more thing to say, and that is a big huge thank you to DHBW University and the whole exchange team, none of this would ever have been able to happen without all the hard work from you guys, so thank you for giving me this chance to experience Europe, Germany specifically and it is something I will treasure forever. I will never forget my exchange to Germany 2017."

"The moment I got here my first impression was very good. The fact is that this city, the campus and the local people are all very nice and keep surprising me and I thought "I wish I could stay longer than 3 months". I mean, I love Germany. I have had a lot of experiences living in Lörrach. My host family are very nice, caring and kind, I couldn't ask for more. We do a lot of things together. We cooked some traditional foods, walked down to the city and we have done some bike travelling to Switzerland.

The International Office also helped me a lot during my study at the DHBW. I have been joining some events provided by the Stuv and Connect. Both local and international students are very nice too. I'm gonna keep them as my friends forever. And YES, we will wait for you guy to visit us in Indonesia!"

"My experience at the DHBW over one Semester has provided me with many memorable stories with amazing people from all over the world. I have to mention the Germany education System is one of the most well designed systems from what I can see. Even though it is a little more difficult than I expected.

I really do appreciate the International Office, who helped me to find a room and with other things. Also the German locals and of course the Connect Group have helped us a lot to make everything easier. I know that I will miss this small city and the amazing people!"
